During OctoberNovember, age-standardized IRRs for deaths among unvaccinated persons were 53.2 compared with those in fully vaccinated persons with a booster dose and 12.7 compared with persons without a booster dose; these results represented crude VE against death of 98% and 92%, respectively. Similarly, as the share of the population with a booster rose somewhat during 2022, the share of deaths among boosted people also rose. The waning protection from vaccines is why CDC recommends recent booster shots, and why its especially important for people at higher risk to stay up-to-date on boosters. Eligible persons should stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations. SAS (version 9.4; SAS Institute) and R (version 4.1.0; R Foundation) were used to conduct all analyses. All of the authorized and approved vaccines are effective at preventing severe COVID-19.
